Three Ideals I like from the NAEYC Code of
Ethics:
Ideal 1.3 “To recognize and respect the unique
qualities, abilities and potential of each child.”
Ideal 1.10 “To ensure that each child’s
culture, language, ethnicity and family structure are recognized and valued in
the program.
Ideal 2.6 “To acknowledge families’ child rearing values and their right to make decisions for their children.”
An Ideal I like from the DEC Code of Ethics:
Ideal 6 “We shall build relationships with
individual children and families while individualizing the curricula and
learning environment to facilitate young children’s development and learning.”
I like these ideals
because they show respect for children as individuals. I think the goal and ability to individualize
curriculum, is one of the strongest characteristics of the early childhood
philosophy of teaching. In my opinion,
this philosophy is the best way to teach at any age. I also feel that, when children are cared for
many hours in childcare, it is common for the right for parents to make choices
for their child to be violated. I do my
best to guard against this as much as possible in my own work with children and
parents.
